EDT Driving Lesson FAQs

EDT lessons (essential driver training) are 12 one hour Driving lessons, that are designed to teach a learner driver the core skills required to drive safely on the road.

The RSA (Road Safety Authority) has deemed it mandatory that you will have to complete the 12 EDT Driving lesson programme, before you can be issued with an RSA driving test date.

Any driver who has been issued a Irish learner permit on or after 04/04/2011 is required to complete the 12 hour EDT driving lesson programme. As you complete each module your approved driving instructor (ADI) must record your progress in your RSA EDT logbook.

Lesson 1: Car Controls And Safety Checks
Lesson 2: Correct Positioning
Lesson 3: Changing Direction
Lesson 4: Progression Management
Lesson 5: Correct Positioning (More Complex Situations)
Lesson 6: Anticipation And Reaction
Lesson 7: Sharing The Road
Lesson 8: Driving Safely Through Traffic
Lesson 9: Changing Direction (More Complex Situations)
Lesson 10: Speed Management
Lesson 11: Driving Calmly
Lesson 12: Night Driving

The EDT logbook is an important document, which you must keep safe and take along to each driving lesson. Your ADI must sign off on your lessons, by stamping the relevant sections for each individual lesson. Your ADI then uploads each lesson to the RSA website to record your completed lesson. Your EDT logbook is a vital record of your driver training and progress and you may not sit the Irish practical driving test without it being completed and uploaded to the RSA Website via your driving instructor.
